Abstract

1,043,430. Television pick-up tubes; photoconductive devices. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1963 [Jan. 9, 1963], No. 51280/63. Headings H1D and H1K. A target for use in a pick-up tube consists of a layer of material in which electrons are generated in response to radiation separated from a conductive layer by a layer of insulatng material between 50 and 100 A thick and having a band gap in excess of 4eV. In operation a field of greater than 10<SP>5</SP> volts/cm. is established across the insulating layer. The conductive layer may be of evaporated gold or of tin oxide formed by spraying a solution of a tin salt on to a heated substrate and is about 500 Š thick. A 50-100 Š thick insulating layer of silicon monoxide or magnesium oxide may be evaporated on this and a porous or non- porous layer of photo-conductive material sensitive to light or electrons formed over it also by evaporation. Suitable photo-conductors are antimony trisulphide, and arsenic selenides or sulpho-selenide. Modification of the targets described in Specification 889,313 by inclusion of an insulating layer between the conductive and radiation sensitive layers is also suggested.
