Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the electrostatic light emission and reduce the dark currents, by roughening the inner surface of a container to keep the secondary electron emission ratio less than 1 and providing conductor layers on the outer surface of the container and applying thereto a potential nearly equal to that of dynodes facing each other.
CONSTITUTION: The inner surface of an air-tight glass container 1, in which sealed are a photoelectric surface 2 at one end and leads 3 at the other end, is roughened by etching treatment with hydrofluoric acid type aqueous solution or the like to make a rough surface 8, and a plurality of dynodes 5, an output electrode 6, and a focusing electrode 7 are mounted on an electrode retaining board 4 within the container 1. Further, axially divided cylindrical conductor layers 9 are applied onto the outer surface of the container 1, and applied thereto is a potential nearly equal to that of dynodes 5 facing each other. The rough surface 8 can keep the secondary electron emission ratio less than 1 to prevent the fluorescence generation from the container wall bombarded by electrons and the conductor layers 9 can prevent the electrostatic light emission from the container wall to decrease the dark currents, so that detection precision for very small currents can be improved.
