Abstract
In one modification of a method whereby successive bismuth and silver layers aare deposited on a cathode by evaporation, this is done from a single source of an alloy of silver and bismuth, preferably in equal parts. In another modificaiton to the step whereby the bismuth is oxidized through the silver layer by simple exposure to oxygen this is carried out above room temperaature, for example 150 DEG C. The bismuth layer may be five to ten atoms thick, or alternatively be so thick as to be opaque, and it may be deposited on a glass envelope. After oxidaation caesium may be deposited on the silver.
