Abstract

845,734. Television pick-up tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. Aug. 28, 1958 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 442/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). A camera tube, e.g. a videcon tube, with a photo-cathode and an adjacent mesh in which the photo-cathode is prepared by first evaporating antimony trisulphide through the mesh to form a porous or spongy layer, and then heating the mesh to evaporate the antimony trisulphide deposited on the mesh to form a second compacted cathode layer, has an initial coating of antimony, containing oxygen provided on the mesh so that after the second evaporation step the mesh is left non-light reflecting instead of bright as would otherwise be the case. The initial coating of antimony is effected by sputtering or evaporation in an atmosphere of oxygen and may be provided on an intermediate layer of chromium. The antimony trisulphide is evaporated in the presence of argon.
