Abstract

547,806. Photo-electric layers. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and SOMMER, A. March 10, 1941, No. 3255. [Class 39 (i)] A photo-electrically sensitive layer is formed by depositing a layer of a fluoride of a metal other than an alkali or alkaline earth metal on to a metallic layer, e.g. silver, and evaporating an alkali metal, preferably caesium, on to the fluoride layer. In an example, silver fluoride is evaporated on to a base layer of silver in an evacuated envelope, and caesium is then distilled on to the fluoride layer whilst the layer is maintained at a temperature of approximately 150-200‹ C. The composite layer is then baked until maximum sensitivity is obtained. Before or after this baking, additional silver or silver fluoride may be evaporated on to the layer, or the layer may be superficially oxidized to alter the spectral sensitivity.
