599,151. Photo-electric cells ; electron-multipliers. FARNSWORTH TELEVISION & RADIO CORPORATION. June 15, 1945, No. 15300. Convention date, April 7, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A photocell, which may include an electron multiplier 7 ... 11 of the photocurrent, has a concave reflecting member 4 of large lightgathering power opposite the convex photocathode 6, and a metal vapour gun 13 permanently in position to supersensitise the cathode 6 and shielded by aperture 5 so as not to metallise the transparent wall 14. The caesium sensitised cathode, prepared by depositing caesium on a silver oxide surface as by evaporating it from a caesium salt, is supersensitised after sealing the tube by further deposition of a metal such as silver. Reflector 4 is a coating of a metal such as aluminium on the tube wall. The silver evaporator 13 may be a tungsten wire coated with silver or a globule of silver adjacent any suitable heat source and may be housed forward of the reflector but should be disposed to give uniform coating of the cathode. The multiplier 7 ... 11 shown is a series of annular rings with concave secondary emitting surfaces and progressively increasing potentials. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also states that the reflector may be independently mounted within or on the outside of the envelope, and that the sensitising device may be in front of the reflector. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
