Abstract

307,082. Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd., (Assignees of Zworykin, V. K.). March 3, 1928, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes. - A photoelectric cell is formed by depositing a layer of a conductor such as magnesium, an alkaline earth metal or alloy, aluminium alloy, or misch metal on a surface within the cell, after sealing- off and subsequently vaporizing a substance containing an alkali or other light-sensitive metal so as to form a very thin film on the conducting layer; several such lightsensitive films may be deposited so as to form a composite film. As shown, a piece of magnesium 5 is attached to an electrode 4, preferably of annular form, having a support, which carries a glass disc 7 and is passed through a neck having a sleeve 6 and a flange 9. After exhaustion the bulb is sealed and the electrode 4 is heated by high-frequency induced current so as to vaporize the magnesium 5, which is deposited on the wall and in contact with a wire 8 sealed through the wall. The disc, sleeve, and flange prevent deposition of metal on the neck. The light-sensitive metal may be introduced by heating it in a small tube, or a weak solution of caesium &c. trinitride may be painted on a part of the electrode 4 remote from the magnesium, or a salt of an alkali metal, such as a carbonate, cyanide. chromate. borate, phosphate or tungstate may be mounted on an auxiliary electrode 14 and heated by electronic or ionic bombardment from an auxiliary filament electrode 13, so as to decompose the salt. A small part of the wall is subsequently heated to drive off metal and form a window. A filling of gas such as argon, helium, or neon may be provided. Specifications 178,300 and 190,218 are referred to.
