Abstract
1335451 Photo-electric detectors AKADAMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTER DER DDR 17 Feb 1971 4834/71 Heading H1D A vacuum ultra-violet photon counter comprises a photo-emissive cathode 3 the emission from which is focused on an aperture in a diaphragm 5 which prevents the passage of field emission electrons and of stray light and beyond which is an electron detector, such as a scintillator or a solid body detector. In the arrangement shown the detector is a scintillator 7, preferably a plastics scintillator and may be frusto-conical in shape; its surface should be polished and it may be coupled to a photomultiplier 8 by means of a plastics material so that light from the scintillator passes either directly or by means of a reflector 9 to the multiplier. The photo-cathode 3 should have a flat polished surface and may be coated with an insulating material such as calcium chloride to reduce field emission. The cathode may be exchangeable so that a material with a desired spectral characteristic may be used, and it is attached to a tubular lens 4 to which a 20 kv. supply is connected in operation through the lead 10. The electrodes are mounted within an evacuated enclosure 2 into which passes the input radiation from a slit 1.
