Abstract
1476213 Photocathodes R C A CORPORATION 12 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 31066/74 Heading H1D A photocathode comprising a layer of Sb and K deposited on a substrate is sensitized by heating to 200-250 C., successively evaporating on to the heated layer Na, Sb and K, baking to 210-250 C. and evaporating K a number of times whilst reducing the temperature to 170 C; each evaporation step and the baking are continued at least until a maximum sensitivity is achieved and preferably until it falls to 70-80% of the maximum. The photocathode is able to operate at higher temperature than those sensitized with Cs. The cathode is formed on the inner surface of a photo multiplier tube containing sources of Na, Sb and K. The sources of Na and K comprise Na and K chromate, Zr and W respectively. The cathode may be used as a secondary electron emitter.
