Oct. 21, 1932, .No. 29513. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] A gas-filled cell has a cathode in the form of a plate 4, an anode consisting of a flat helix 7 surrounding the cathode, and two plane grid electrodes 9 arranged one on each side of the anode and connected with the cathode directly or through a source of potential 14 lower than that of the anode so as to act as collectors of ions and prevent bombardment of the cathode. The filling may be argon at a pressure of 20 to 300 microns. The cathode may be coated with silver by electroplating, chemical deposition, or electric sputtering, and the coating oxidized by passing a glow discharge between the cathode and anode in an oxidizing atmosphere ; caesium is distilled from a pellet in a capsule 8, and excess caesium is removed.
