Abstract
389,097. Photo-electric cells. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. ; 463, West Street, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 8, 1931, No. 25221. [Class 39 (i).] A photo-electric cathode is formed by depositing a layer of black spongy material such as soot, fine-grained carbon, or platinum black on the surface, and depositing material such as rubidium or other alkali metal on the spongy layer. A copper cathode 7, coated with the spongy layer, and an anode 4 are in the form of flat parallel plates. The envelope is evacuated by a system comprising a vacuum pump 20, a mercury vapour pump 21, a McLeod pressure gauge 23, a liquid air trap 24, and an ionization gauge 25, the envelope being heated by windings 26, 27, 28, and the anode heated by electron bombardment from a filament 6 mounted behind it. A pointed weight 16 is raised by a magnet and allowed to drop so as to break a capsule 15 containing a definite amount of rubidium. The container 12 is heated and the rubidium distilled on to the surface of a reservoir 14, the container being sealed off at 13. The rubidium is distilled from the reservoir and deposited on the unheated cathode. Inert gas may be admitted subsequently from a reservoir 22. In a modification the foundation metal of the cathode is deposited on the wall of the envelope. Specification 381,606 is referred to.
