[Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XL] A method of evacuating an envelope, such as that of an electric discharge device, comprises vaporizing a getter within a container housed in the envelope and condensing the vaporized getter in a mass of finely-divided or porous material within the container to provide an active surface of relatively large dimensions which is exposed to the residual gas within the envelope. In the form described a discharge rectifier comprises an anode and an incandescent cathode to one leg of which is attached a getter cartridge 8 comprising an insulating tube 13 provided at each end with a metal cap. One cap 9 carries a quantity of getter material 11, and the other 10 is provided with perforations 12. The cartridge is filled with glass wool, glass powder or other finely divided material 15. The getter is evaporated by eddy current heating of the cap 9 and is deposited on the material 15, to which the residual gases have access through holes 12. In a modification, the getter cartridge is a porous ceramic capsule, in the pores of which the getter is deposited.
