Abstract
267,142. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Mackay, G. M. T.). March 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-A thermionic electrode for use as a cathode or anode comprises a metal tube or container enclosing a substance which has a materially lower electron affinity than the container, and is diffusible through the wall of the container under the action of heat so as to'form a film emitting electrons or positive ions. The tube may consist of nickel, iron .or similar metal having a high work function, and the active material may consist of caesium, rubidium, barium, calcium, thorium, or cerium, or a mixture of these metals, or a mixture of compounds of the metals with a reducing agent, for instance, a mixture of caesium chloride and powdered magnesium or calcium. The tube containing the material is closed by a screw and is swaged and drawn to a small diameter. The filament thus formed mav be used as the cathode of a two- or three-electrode valve, or, as shown, a short length of filament 14 for generating positive ions may be connected with a contact device 16, the valve comprising also a filament cathode 11, a grid 13, and an anode 12. Specifications 208,728 and 208,729 are referred to.
