Abstract
613,946. Cathode materials and processing. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 9, 1946, No. 7441. Convention date, July 3, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In a thermionic tube containing at least one secondary-emission electrode activated with caesium oxide, the non-activated parts of the surface are covered with the product obtained by reduction at a low temperature of one or more of the oxides of nickel, tungsten, or molybdenum. The reduction may be only partial and may be effected during about 10 minutes at a temperature of 700‹ C. in a hydrogen atmosphere. The product is a black form of the metal, with or without admixed oxide, and has a high thermal emissivity ; it is capable of absorbing small quantities of free caesium generated within the tube. The oxide may be applied by spraying, dipping or cataphoresis before insertion of the electrode into the tube, the reduction being effected after insertion. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes zirconium as one of the metals of which the oxides may be used for coating the non-activated parts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
