Abstract
822,553. Cathode materials. PATENTTREUHAND-GESELLSCHAFT FœR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. Feb. 15, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955], No. 4797/56. Class 39(1). A gas-filled low pressure discharge tube such as a fluorescent lamp has electrodes which have an emissive coating of alkaline earth metal oxides containing also about 0À05-1À5% of one or more of those alkali metals whose work function is greater and whose ion radius is smaller than the corresponding values for the alkaline earth metal responsible for the emission. With barium-containing emissive material, potassium, sodium, or lithium may be used. One method of preparation is by precipitating alkaline earth metal tartrate from the soluble nitrate with sodium potassium tartrate. The tartrate is then converted into the carbonate by heating in oxygen. This method produces a very firm incorporation of the small alkali addition. Another suitable method is to add alkali carbonates to the barium-strontium tartrates precipitated by treating soluble barium-strontium compounds with ammonium tartrate.
