Abstract
637,385. Cathode materials and processing. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. April 30, 1947, No. 11592. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A process for manufacturing a cathode consists in heating a mixture, compound or alloy, containing an alkaline earth metal in an evacuated container to vaporize the metal on to a cathode core of nickel, copper or other oxidized metal ; heating the core until the alkali metal is oxidized ; subjecting the cathode to prolonged exposure to an atmosphere, such as air, which contains carbon dioxide so that the oxide is converted into carbonate ; mounting the cathode in a discharge tube ; heating the cathode to reconvert the carbonate into oxide ; and de-gassing the tube. In this way an emissive layer of thickness between 0.1 and 1 micron may be produced. The exposure to air should preferably be for at least 48 hours.
