Abstract

641,796. Cathode materials and processing. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. April 16, 1947, No. 10106. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode for an ultra-high-frequency tube has a thin emissive layer formed by precipitation of one or more alkaline earth metals from the vapour phase and subsequent oxidation. The layer is not more than 10 Á thick and preferably less than 5Á, and the vapour may be obtained by heating one or more azides, one or more alloys, or a mixture of one or more oxides with a reducing agent such as magnesium or zirconium. A mixture of barium and strontium azides may be used in such proportions that the resulting oxides are in a ratio between 1:1 and 4: 1. This may be precipitated on a core of metal provided with a thin layer of copper superficially oxidized. The cathode is then heated to convert the precipitated metal into oxides. The cathode may be formed outside the tube in which it is to be used, subjected to an atmosphere containing CO 2 to convert the oxide into carbonate, mounted in the tube and heated to convert the carbonate into oxide. Specifications 229,622 and 637,385 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 637,385.
