Abstract

282,754. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Devers, P. K.). Dec. 27, 1926, [Convention date]. Arc lamps; vacuum tubes.-An arc is started by tilting a container so as to cause mercury 8 or other vaporizable conducting liquid to pass into a small cup 14. preferably of silica and complete the circuit between auxiliary electrodes 12, 13. The auxiliary arc evaporates some of the mer cury &c., breaks the circuit, and travels over resistance coils 10, 11 to the main electrodes 6, 7. The resistance of the coils is such that the resistance of the auxiliary circuit is greater than that of the main discharge. Mercury &c. evaporated from the cup condenses and returns to the space around the cup. The container may be evacuated or provided with a filling of nitrogen, hydrogen, a rare gas such as argon, or a mixture of gases.
