Abstract
553,841. Photo-electric cathodes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Jan. 23, 1942, No. 978. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] A mica disc 16 supported from the anode 11 of a photo cell is interposed between the cathode 10 and an activating pellet 12 also carried by the anode. The silver plate cathode is first oxidized and then reduced to roughen it and afterwards is again oxidized ; the pellet contains caesium chromate, chromic oxide and powdered aluminium which when flashed will yield caesium vapour to be deposited on the tube wall whence it can be transferred to the oxidized cathode surface. The sensitizing process may be as described in Specification 503,738. Rubidium, lithium, potassium or sodium may be used instead of caesium ; the cathode may be a nickel or copper sheet with a silver surface; the surface roughening may be effected by sand blasting, acid etching, or applying by brushing a coat of silver oxide with a binder and reducing the oxide ; the mica disc is baked before mounting in the tube to remove moisture.
