Abstract
319,734. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Mesick, H. F.). Sept. 27, 1928, [Conventioi-t date]. Addition to 303,476. Vacuum tubes. - A photo-electric cell according to the parent Specification is provided with a member coated with a substance which is capable of absorbing all the free alkali or alkaline earth metal other than that forming the electrode. A nickel or other metal disc 6 is preferably coated with finely divided carbon such as a colloidal suspension of graphite in water. The necessity for baking the cell to 300‹ C. to remove excess alkali &c. metal as described in the parent Specification is thereby avoided. Alkali &c. metal may be driven off from the coated member during operation of the cell by heating. A silver bead, not shown, is mounted on a filament 7 and is vaporized by heating the filament so as to form a deposit on the envelope, the anode 8 preventing deposition on the window 11, and a glass disc 12 prevents deposition on the neck. The silver coating is oxidized by admitting oxygen at a pressure of 1 to 2 mm. of mercury and heating the bulb in an exhaust oven to 360‹ C.; or a high voltage, high frequency potential may be applied between the cathode and anode. Caesium, rubidium, or potassium is admitted through an extension 14, and the coated disc 6 is heated to prevent absorption of caesium. &c. thereby. Instead of silver, the foundation metals deposited on the envelope, or on plates or cylinders may consist of magnesium, calcium, copper, nickel, tungsten, or barium. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 317,209.
