Abstract
517,743. Electron multipliers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 6, 1938, No. 23310. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A secondary emitting electrode comprises a layer of oxide on a core material and a sensitive layer of an alkali compound practically free from alkali metal on the oxide. In manufacture an oxide such as tungsten, molybdenum, tin, nickel or cuprous oxide is formed as a layer on a base ; raised to a temperature of 150‹-200‹ C. it is brought into contact with caesium vapour, care being taken that only a part of the oxide layer is reduced by the caesium. In working with say a barium thermionic cathode or a caesium caesium photoelectric cathode-if the caesium oxide of the secondary emitting layer is reduced the metal oxide again oxidizes the reduced caesium. Specification 492,250 is referred to.
