Abstract

490,652. Electron multipliers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS'GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 19, 1937, No. 10819/38. Convention date, June 22, 1936. Divided application. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge tube containing a thermionic cathode, one or more grids, an anode and a secondary emission electrode is so designed that the maximum temperature of the cathode during operation is not more than 700‹ C., whereby vaporization of the cathode is reduced to such an extent as to prevent deleterious action of vaporized material such as barium on the secondary emission electrode. The temperature of such a cathode may be rendered more uniform by utilizing a thick cathode surface, by giving it a smaller diameter at the ends, or by winding the heater with a variable pitch. The cathode may be of copper or copper alloy. Emissive material may be removed from those parts of the cathode which do not participate in emission, for example those opposite the grid supports. The emissive material may be a mixture of low volatility, for example, a mixture of 20 per cent barium oxide and 80 per cent strontium oxide.
