399,477. Thermionic valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. April 2, 1932, No. 9513. Convention date, April 2, 1931. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i).] The dimensions and spacing of the cathode, control grid, and anode are such that, when the standard heating energy with which the valve is normally designed to work is applied to the cathode, the ratio of the steepness to the heating energy of the cathode is a maximum regarded as a function of this heating energy, the steepness being the greatest slope of the anode current-grid voltage characteristic for negative grid voltages. Small departures of the ratio from the maximum are admissible within the range of ratios corresponding to variations of 20 per cent in the heating energy from its value for the above maximum. A definite steepness is thus obtained with a minimum of .cathode-heating energy. In practice, the cathode is larger and at a lower temperature than cathodes of known valves. Dimensions are given for a valve with a long indirectly heated cathode of rectangular crosssection surrounded by a helical wire grid and by a plate anode.
