[Class 40 (v).] The energy amplification of a screen-grid stage of a radio transmitter is increased by raising the screen-grid voltage so that the plate current reaches a saturation value with a control grid voltage that does not produce substantial grid current. The raising of the screen-grid voltage shifts the plate current-control grid voltage curve from the position 1 to the position 2, in which all the rising part of the curve lies on the negative side of the zero grid volts ordinate 0 B. The valve employed should be such that its amplification factor, measured with plate and screen-grid joined, is small. Secondary emission from the plate is reduced by using a third grid between it and the screengrid, or the plate may be formed of, or coated with, a material that is a poor emitter of electrons. The external screening of the valve stage should be adjacent to the internal screen formed by the screen-grid.
