Abstract

417,440. Valve amplifying circuits. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. May 31, 1934, No. 16280. Convention date, June 20, 1933. Addition to 388,292. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] An amplifier of the kind described in the parent Specification, in which grid bias is automatically adjusted according to signal volume with the object of saving plate current, is modified by arranging the rectifier in one of the amplifying valves, preferably a valve in an earlier stage of the amplifier. As shown, part of the output across a choke coil 9 or transformer in the final stage 1 of the amplifier, is fed through condensers 26, 27 and resistance 28 to a rectifier formed by an anode 25 and a cathode 23 heated by the filament of an earlier valve 2. The resulting D.C. voltage across the resistance 28 is smoothed by condensers 31, 32 and is applied to the grid of the valve 1 in opposition to the voltage of a battery 33 thus giving high negative bias when the signals are weak and less bias as the signals increase. The cathode 23 may be heated by a separate filament connected in parallel with the main filament of the valve 2 ; or the main filament may form a directly-heated cathode for the rectifier. A resistance 29 is connected across the rectifying circuit. In a modification, a push-pull pair of valves is employed in the output stage. An inductance coil may be connected in series in the rectifier circuit to diminish the frequency-discriminating effect of the series condensers 26, 27.
