Abstract

551,981. Automatic volume control. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). July 29, 1941, No. 9659. [Class 40 (v)] A circuit for deriving or amplifying a control voltage comprises a valve to the control grid of which is applied the control voltage to be amplified or the voltage from which the control voltage is to be derived the derived or the amplified control voltage being taken, from the secondary emitting auxiliary cathode. In Fig. 1 the negative voltage from the diode load 8 is fed through resistance 10 to the grid of a valve 12 having an auxiliary cathode 13 connected through resistance 15 to a positive potential, and through lead 17 and resistance 18 to the grid of an intermediate frequency amplifier 2, the cathode of which is maintained at a higher potential relative to earth than a cathode 13 by a potentiometer 22. Thus the potential of auxiliary cathode 13 decreases with increased signal strength and controls the gain of valve 2 to keep the signal constant. The valve 12'may also serve as an audio-frequency amplifier by connecting a tap 8 on the diode load 6 through a condenser 9 to the grid of 12 the output being taken from the anode 14. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement for producing volume expansion. The audiofrequency signal is applied from terminals 25, 26 to the grid of an audio amplifier 29 and also to the grid of a valve 27 arranged as an anode detector. The amplification of valve 29 depends on the potential of the screen 32 which is connected to the auxiliary cathode of valve 27 the potential of which varies with the strength of the applied signal. This arrangement gives volume expansion.
