Abstract

559,290. Frequency modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1942, No. 16807. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1941. [Class 40 (v)] In a frequency modulation receiver, the load resistances of the balanced discriminator rectifiers are connected in the grid circuits of amplifying valves which have their anode output circuits associated in push-pull relation ; and the grid circuits are arranged to give an approximately logarithmic relation between input volts and anode current. The Circuit serves to eliminate amplitude modulation effects without using a limiter. As shown, the discriminator is fed from the I.F. stage 5 and includes off-tune circuits 7, 8 connected to rectifiers 15, 16 and load resistances 13, 14, the junction of which is earthed and the positive outer ends connected to the grids of the respective amplifiers 22, 23. The anodes are associated in push-pull relation with a subsequent AF stage, the HT current being fed to a centre tapping on the transformer 25, or an indirect feed may be employed with capacities inserted between the anodes and the transformer. Automatic volume control is provided by connecting the rectifier cathodes through resistances 17, 18, smoothing condenser 19, polarity-reversing amplifier 19' to the grids of the early stages of the set. A non-linear relationship between input voltage and anode current in the valves 22, 23 is ensured by series resistances 20, 21 which owing to the flow of grid current absorb part of the input voltage. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the grids of the AF amplifiers 48, 49 are connected to earth through triode valves 22, 23 which cause a further drop of voltage in the grid resistors 44, 45. The grids of the triodes 22, 23 are connected through resistances 20, 21 to the ends of the rectifier load resistances 13, 14.
