Abstract

672,256. Valve amplifying circuits. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd. June 8, 1950 [June 9, 1949], No. 15415/49. Class 40 (vi). In a push-pull amplifier two or more stages which are similarly phased in respect of in-phase voltage variations are connected in series across the H.T. supply, so that negative feed-back occurs in respect of in-phase signals: As applied to a three-stage amplifier the first stage, comprising a double-triode 4 provided with anode load resistances 13, 14, is connected in series with the third stage which also comprises a double triode, 6. Unbalanced signals are applied via terminals 10 to one grid of the valve 4, the other grid being earthed and a balanced output being obtained by means of a common cathode resistance 12. The anodes of the valve 4 are directly connected to the grids of the second stage, which comprises a further doubletriode 5 with a common cathode resistance 19 and anode loads 20, 21. The final stage 6 is also provided with a common cathode resistance 15 and the grids are directly connected to the anodes of the valve 5; anode load resistances 16, 17 are provided, a push-pull output being obtained at the terminals 18. Additional negative feed-back may be obtained by connection of one or other anode of the stage 6 to the corresponding grid of the stage 4, via resistances 25, 27 and D.C. blocking condensers 26, 28. The arrangement is balanced by means of an adjustable potentiometer 11 connected between the cathodes of the valve 4; the state of balance is indicated by a centre-zero meter 22 which may be connected between the anodes of the valve 6. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the first stage of the amplifier comprises a pair of pentodes and balance is adjusted by means of a potentiometer connected between the screens of the valves, and whose slider is connected to a further potentiometer across the H.T. supply whereby the total current may be adjusted. In this embodiment the output stage works into a push-pull transformer arranged in its cathode circuit and requires an anode current exceeding that of the preceding valves in the series chain, the excess current being by-passed over a resistance which is connected to a tap on the H.T. supply.
