Abstract

421,644. Thermionic valves; valve circuits for wireless reception. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Blyth Road, Hayes, Middlesex, and COOPER, A. H., Appledore, Syke Ings, Iver, Bucking- hamshire. June 21, 1933, No. 17743. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A valve has an anode, a cathode, a control grid, a second or screen grid, and a third grid controlling the current to the second grid without affecting the current to the anode when the potential of the second grid is maintained constant. As shown in Fig. 1, the screen grid 4 and the indirectly-heated cathode 2 are longer than the control grid 3 and the anode 5, and the third grid 6 is arranged between the extended portions of the cathode and screen grid 4. A suppressor grid 8 may be mounted between screen grid 4 and the anode, and a grid 7 at a positive potential may be provided to prevent feed back from the screen grid 4 to the control grid 3. The control grid may be of the variable-mu type. The valve may be used in the superheterodyne receiving circuit shown in Fig. 2. The input circuit 11, 12 is connected between the control grid 3 and a variable bias which may provide automatic gain control. The grid 6 is connected through a leak resistance 15 to earth and through a condenser 16 with a tuned circuit 17, 18 coupled with a winding 19 in the circuit of the screen grid 4 to produce local oscillations. An anode circuit 20, 21, tuned to an intermediate frequency, is coupled to the input of an amplifier through an inductance 22. A biassing resistance 9, shunted by a condenser 10, is connected between the cathode and earth so as to give a small negative bias to the grid 6 and produce stability of the local oscillations.
