Abstract
436,856. Valve circuits for wireless reception. FERRANTI, Ltd., and TAYLOR, M. K., Hollinwood, Lancashire. Feb. 15, 1934, No. 5027. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to receivers embodying automatic volume control and including means for inter-channel noise suppression and comprises the provision of a common ohmic resistance in the anode-cathode circuit of a noise suppressor valve and a low frequency amplifier valve and also included in the grid biassing circuit of the latter. In one embodiment, the diode portion of a valve V1, Fig. 1, is fed with signals from a circuit LC, the demodulated component of its output, developed across the load resistance b, being applied through a condenser d to the grid e of the triode portion for low frequency amplification. Bias for the grid e is due to the cathode resistance f which carries also the anode current of a compensating valve V2, the grid of which is connected to a tapping h on the resistance b. When no signal is being received the valve V2 passes a large current through resistance f to block the grid of valve V1. When a signal is being rectified by the diode the grid of valve V2 is rendered negative its anode current drops and the grid bias of valve V1 attains a value permitting normal amplification. In a modification the grid bias of the valve V1 may be in part due to a potential divider connected across the plate supply. In another embodiment the valve V2 is arranged to oscillate and so pass a large anode current during the no-signal periods. The variable grid bias for the compensating valve may be derived by the rectification of a specially produced intermediate frequency. Thus the valve V2, Fig. 4, is biassed by the potential due to the load resistance w of a rectifier R fed from an I.F. circuit L3, C3, associated with the anode circuit of a heptode frequency changer V3, fed with signals from the circuit LC through a condenser q. Alternatively the valve V2 may itself act as the rectifier of the I.F. signal. Specification 405,124<*> is referred to.
