Abstract
413,443. Valve circuits for wireless reception. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and SMYTH, C. N., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. March 28, 1933, No. 9351. [Class 40 (v).] When signals below a predetermined threshold value are being received a blocking bias is applied to the signal rectifier and to the grid of a valve amplifying the D.C. gain control potentials. As shown, the signal rectifier is one of the diodes 4, 3 of a double-diode triode valve 5, with a load resistance 6, the D.C. and A.C. potentials across which are applied separately to the triode grid. The low frequency output from valve 5 is taken from the transformer 7 associated with its plate circuit. Potentials for the automatic gain control of other valves in the circuit are taken from a lead 8 being derived after D.C. amplification in the triode 5 from the cathode resistance 25. The control is applied through and delayed by the diode 9, 3 the anode of which is biassed through resistance 28 from the portion 21 of a potentiometer 19-24. The muting valve 13 is a double diode triode the two diode anodes being connected together and fed from a tuned circuit 10. The load resistance 14 of this diode circuit is also in the triode grid circuit 16 together with an adjustable biassing voltage taken through the leads 15 from a tapping on the main supply potentiometer, while the triode plate circuit 17 includes the resistance 6. When signals below a predetermined intensity are being received, the valve 13 passes a large plate current through the resistance 6, thus blocking the signal diode 4, 3 and the grid of the triode 5. When the signal increases, the voltage across the resistance 14 increases, blocking the grid 16 and removing the blocking potential across resistance 6, which further results in increased amplification of the controlled stages and thus increases the rapidity of the change from the inoperative to the operative state and vice versa.
