Abstract

414,187. Valve circuits for wireless reception. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Blyth Road, Hayes, Middlesex, and KINROSS, R. I., 74, Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, London. April 10, 1933, No. 10705. [Class 40 (v).] The damping of a tuned circuit is varied in accordance with signal strength to effect automatic gain control. As shown, the intermediate frequency tuned circuit 1, 2 feeds an amplifier 4 and second detector 9. A twoelectrode rectifier 17 in series with the portion R2 of a potential divider R2, R3 and the detector cathode resistance R1 is shunted across the circuit 1, 2, the potentials due to R2 and R1 being approximately balanced when no signal is being received. When a signal is applied to the detector the current in resistance R1, falls and the anode of the rectifier 17 becomes positive, current passes therethrough and the circuit 1, 2 is damped to reduce the amplification. By adjustment of resistances R1-R3 the control may be delayed to any extent and the range of control varied. The control may be applied to other tuned circuits or to vary the grid bias of other amplifying valves, control potentials being taken from the terminals a, b connected to the rectifier.
