Abstract

393,415. Valve detecting circuits. TELEFUNKEN GES. FœR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE, 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin. June 6, 1932, No. 15956. Convention date, June 6, 1931. [Class 40 (v).] In order to provide automatic gain control in a wireless receiver, the rectifier stage is continuously in operation (i.e. not quenched) and the relation between the input voltage and output current is logarithmic so that the lowfrequency output is proportional to the degree of modulation of the input high-frequency wave and independent of its mean amplitude. The rectifier stage may include a photoelectric cell activated by a light source modulated by the signal input, as the current output from such a cell is approximately a logarithmic function of the light strength ; alternatively a gas discharge tube may be utilized as the rectifier by virtue of its saturation phenomena. The Figure shows a rectifier stage employing ordinary thermionic valves, which normally exhibit the required logarithmic characteristic over a small part of the upper bend of their characteristic curves. The useful range is extended by employing several valves 1, 2, 3 in parallel and biased to different points on their characteristics by batteries 9, 10, 11 and chokes 6, 7, 8.
