Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23595. [Class 40 (v)] In a cascade carrier frequency amplifier gain and selectivity are controlled by the use of reaction obtained by the provision of a circuit L4, C4 resonant to the carrier frequency in the common cathode lead of a pair of valves 1, 2. Reaction may be controlled by shunting the tuned circuit with a variable resistance or by controlling the grid bias of the earlier valve either manually or in dependence on signal strength. The grid of the second valve may be anchored to the cathode or to earth by resistance 18. The amplifier is preferably the intermediate frequency amplifier in a superheterodyne receiver.
