MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Telefunken Ges. fur Drahtlose Telegraphie; 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin) Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5233. [Class 40 (v)] In an amplitude modulated carrier wave detector in which, the signal together with oscillations of carrier frequency are applied to the grid of the detector, the detector valve has a pronouncedly curved grid voltageanode current characteristic e.g. is of the variable Á or exponential type and is so operated as regards bias and input voltage applied to the grid that, in the absence of the additional carrier source the total grid swing is over a limited region of the characteristic of substantially constant slope, and that with the additional source the grid swing is over a sufficient range to give detection by reason of the curvature of the valve characteristic. The additional carrier source may be a local oscillator controlled by the incoming signal or may consist of filtered and amplified carrier energy. The detector increases selectivity since appreciable output is obtained only by beats between the local source and the incoming signal.
