Abstract

551,472. Wireless receiving and transmitting apparatus. DALGLEISH, J. W., and PYE, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1941, No. 10621. [Class 40 (v)] A combined transmitter and receiver comprises a stable oscillator producing a series of discrete harmonic frequencies, a receiver of the super-heterodyne type of which heterodyne oscillations comprise or are locked in synchronism with any selected one of the harmonics of the stable oscillator, and a transmitter of which the sending frequency is controlled in relation to the frequency of the said heterodyne oscillations by means of an automatic frequency control circuit, so that the sending frequency and the heterodyne frequency differ by the amount of the intermediate frequency of the receiver. The invention is shown applied to a combined transmitter and receiver for frequency modulated carrier signals. Signals received on aerial A<1> are amplified at 5 and fed to a mixer 4, amplifier 6, limiter 7, discriminator and demodulator 8 followed by audio and output stages 9, 10 and telephones T. The mixer 4 is fed by a local oscillator 3 whose frequency is controlled by the output of an amplifier 2 which selects harmonics of a crystalcontrolled multi-vibrator of other stable oscillator 1. By making the fundamental frequency of 1 equal to the separation of the signal channels, e.g. 10 kcs., successive harmonics will provide a suitable oscillator frequency for neighbouring channels. The transmitter comprises a microphone M, reactance modulator 16, oscillator 11, limiter and buffer 12, power amplifier 13 and transmitting aerial A<2>. In order to use the controlled oscillator 1 to control the frequency of transmission, a voltage from 11 is fed to the mixer 4 and the D.C. voltage from the discriminator 8 is fed to the reactance modulator 16 to lock oscillator 11 to the frequency to which the receiver is tuned.
