Abstract

487,627. Thermionic valves ; electron multipliers. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and ALDOUS, W. H. May 4, 1937, No. 12706. [Class 39 (i)] In a frequency-changing valve having two control grids 3, 6 a screen grid 4 is placed between them and coated with secondary emitting material ; an accelerating grid 5 is used between the grids 4, 6 and a further screen grid 7 before the anode 8. A triode consisting of the cathode 2-which is common to the two valve sections-grid 9 and anode 10 supplies the grid 6. More than one secondary emitting grid may be used ; these grids are formed by heating an oxidized metal in caesium vapour. The primary electrons from the cathode 2 produce secondaries at the grid or grids 4 whose kinetic energy is so low that they cannot reach back to the first control grid again.
