Abstract

478,613. Electron multipliers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ALDOUS, W. H. Nov. 10, 1936, No. 30683. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] In a multiplier wherein the primary emission is from a thermionic cathode and is modulated by a control grid and accelerated by a grid-like electrode and wherein the electrons move in crossed electric and magnetic fields, the accelerating electrode is so constructed and biassed that a substantial part of the electrons leaving it are secondary electrons ejected by the primary beam. The control and accelerating grids may surround the cathode, and a flattened portion of the accelerating grid may be in the plane of the secondary cathodes. Primary electrons missing the accelerating grid may fall upon the first potential plate or the second or a later secondary electrode.
