Abstract

533,732. Electron multipliers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Materiel Telephonique Soc. Anon.). Nov. 17, 1939, No. 30278. [Class 39 (i)] A secondary emitting electrode 2 is heated by a filament 3 so as to emit thermionically these thermionic primary electrons being separated from the secondary electrons obtained by impact of a primary beam 1. The separation is effected (i) by a grid 6 at about the potential of the electrode 2 which collects the primaries and allows the secondaries to pass to a collector 7 or to further secondary emitting electrodes ; the collector electrode and grid may be cylindrical, (ii) by electro-static deflector plates 8, Fig. 3, which deflect the slow moving primaries more than the secondaries these going to a collector 11, or (iii) by electromagnetic deflector, the field being strong enough to turn the primaries on to the emitting or some other electrode.
