Abstract
714,440. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1951 [Nov. 27, 1950]. No. 27516/51. Class 39(1) In a cathode-ray tube in which a ribbon beam is deflected over one or more collecting electrodes, the deflecting system comprises two flared plates, one or each of the plates, to which a varying control voltage is applied, being divided into two or more parts 4, 5, at least the part nearest a subsequent grid electrode 6 at a potential of zero or a few volts being given a fixed positive voltage greater than the highest value of the varying control voltage. In the arrangement shown plate 3 is kept at a fixed potential of 150 volts, plate 4 varies from 70 to 220 volts, and plate 5 is fixed at 300 volts. Grid 6 is followed by positive perforated collector electrode 7, suppressor grid 8 connected to 6, and collector anode 9. When the beam is deflected towards plate 4 the electrons repelled by grid 6 go to plate 5. Stray electrons striking plate 4 will generate secondaries which go to plate 5 so that the net current to plate 4 is almost zero. The right hand deflection plate may be divided into several parts alternately connected to a variable and fixed voltage. Both plates may be subdivided, as when both carry varying voltages but when one of them is to be kept at a fixed potential preferably only the variable potential one is subdivided. Grid 6 has a lens effect so as to focus electrons on to the slots in electrode 7.
