Abstract

893,914. Counters. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 2, 1960 [March 5, 1959], No. 7401/60. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] In an electron beam stepping tube having an electron source, deflection electrodes 13, 14, a masking electrode 15, having apertures juxtaposed in the direction of deflection, and an anode 16, it being possible for a beam of electrons to be maintained in different positions by distribution of the current between the masking electrode and the anode, the electron source comprises two control electrodes 18, 19 and provides two electron beams each of which can be deflected, and each of which can be passed or suppressed by its associated control electrode independently of the other. The apertures in the masking electrode are provided in staggered position in two rows so that each row can be scanned by one electron beam. The grids may be made alternately positive and negative by connecting them to a bistable multivibrator. As shown, grid 18 is negative and the lower beam is suppressed while the upper beam impinges, through aperture 6, on anode 16 and is held in this position until a further pulse is supplied to the vibrator, whereupon the upper beam is suppressed and the lower beam impinges wholly upon mask 15. The consequent change in the deflecting field deflects the beam until it enters aperture 7 where it is held until a further pulse is supplied. When the beam reaches position 10 it is immediately restored to position 0 by means of the pulse from electrode 17. Instead of cathode 11 and screen 12, an electron source providing two beams of circular cross-section may be used.
