913,475. Cathode-ray tubes. ABTRONICS Inc. April 19, 1960 [April 16, 1959], No. 13543/60. Class 39 (1). In a cathode-ray tube, a plurality of electrodes 26, 36, 31, Fig. 2, are disposed between beam deflecting means 19 and screen 14 to establish substantially semi-spherical electrical fields symmetrically about the axis of the tube with lines of force radiating from a point on the axis between the deflecting means and the screen to provide post-deflection acceleration and additional radial deflection. As shown, the electrodes 26, 36, 31 include partspherical solid portions and part-spherical grids 51-53 having a common centre of curvature 29. The grids 51-53 may be omitted and grid 51 may be replaced by a part-spherical film of secondary electron-emissive material to obtain increased beam current. In an alternative arrangement, the beam is caused to cross the tube axis by a field produced between partspherical electrodes 61, 64, Fig. 3. Electrode 64 may be connected to screen 14 to establish a field free region within flared portion 67 of this electrode. The spherical electrical fields may be distorted slightly by variation of electrode shapes or potentials to compensate for distortions which might otherwise occur.
