538,381. Thermionic valves and circuits therefor. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and JACOBSEN, B. B. Jan. 30, 1940, No. 1853. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] The effective mutual conductance of a valve having an accelerating grid is increased by positive feedback from a secondary emitting electrode, having a resistance in circuit therewith, to a point in the electron stream where the electron velocity is low. The secondary emitting electrode may itself be arranged at a point in the electron stream where the velocity is low. Fig. 1 shows feedback through condenser 15 from the secondary electron emitting grid 5 to an auxiliary grid 2. The accelerating electrode 4 is at a higher potential than the grid 5 and, in addition there may be provided a screening grid which assists in withdrawing secondary electrons and a suppressor grid. The control and auxiliary grids 2, 3 may be interchanged or intermeshed, and the secondary electron emitting grid 5 may itself serve as the auxiliary grid for providing reaction. Fig. 5 shows'an arrangement in which the secondary electron emitting grid 5 serves as the control grid and feedback is applied through the secondary of the input transformer 24 to the auxiliary grid 3. Fig. 7 shows an additional feedback through network 24 to increase the effective input capacity. Condenser 15 and grid 2 may be omitted so that the sole feedback is through the network 24. Negative feedback may be applied by resistance 19 which may be temperature dependant so as to further stabilize the operation. Control of grid bias through resistance 17 may be used for automatic volume control and gives a large range of control.
