Abstract

743,200. Cathode-ray tubes. RAULAND CORPORATION. Jan. 9, 1953 [Jan. 9, 1952], No. 691/53. Class 39 (1). A cathode-ray receiving tube has a first conductive wall coating 22 between the gun and fluorescent screen, a second conductive wall coating 40 encompassing at least some of the gun electrodes and at least one bi-metal strip 41 secured to one of the gun electrodes and arranged to make contact with coating 40 under normal operating conditions and to be withdrawn from contact when a foreseen rise in temperature occurs during the manufacture of the tube, as during sealing in of the gun and degassing. In this way risk of fracture of the envelope due to unequal heating of the envelope and bi-metal strip is avoided. Bi-metal spring strips 41, of which there may one or any desired number, may be made of an alloy of 22 per cent Ni, 3 per cent Cr, 75 per cent Fe, or 72 per cent Mn, 18 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Ni (for strip 42) and 36 per cent Ni, 64 per cent Fe (for strip 43). The electrode structure preferably incorporates an ion trap and a " unipotential " electron lens as described in Specification 743,181. Conducting coating 40, preferably of silver paint, is provided to minimize cold emission and sparking, which would cause loss of brightness or " tearing out " of small parts of the picture. Specifications 679,348 and 715,235 also are referred to.
