Vacuum tubes. - An electron-emitting oxide cathode is made by coating a highly refractory metal such as tungsten or molybdenum, which is preferably incapable of forming an alloy with alkaline earth metal with (a) a film of a highly refractory metal such as platinum which forms such an alloy, and the oxide of which has a, low vapour tension and (b) a film of a readily-oxidizable metal such as copper, which is preferably capable of forming the alloy and volatizes at a low temperature, partly or entirely oxidizing the surface, and applying (c) barium or other alkaline earth metal which is oxidized by interaction with copper &c. oxide.
