Abstract

1,006,688. Electron multipliers. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Sept. 26, 1963 [Oct. 12, 1962], No. 37934/63. Heading H1D. A low-noise photomultiplier tube comprises an imperforate, opaque and conductive barrier member 12 dividing the envelope into two compartments, one containing a photocathode 11, and the other a plurality of dynodes 30-37. A transmissive dynode 26 is provided adjacent barrier 12 to receive primary electrons from the cathode and emit secondary electrons towards dynode 30. As shown, primary electrons are focused by electrodes 20-22 on to a low density deposit 26 of secondary emissive material of the kind described in Specification 911,560. The barrier 12 may be of aluminium, or of aluminium oxide coated with aluminium so as to present a conductive surface which is opaque to light. A grid electrode 39 is provided to control emission from transmissive dynode 26.
