Abstract

943,535. Cathode materials and processing. TESLA, NARODNI PODNIK. Oct. 16, 1959, No. 35097/59. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp has a supply cathode heated by the impact of the discharge comprising a porous metallic body, e.g. of tungsten, impregnated with a first supply of electron emissive material which during operation of the lamp diffuses to the surface of the porous body, and having a second supply of electron emissive material with a lower work function than that of the cathode body, formed independently of and of different material from the first supply, provided on the external surface of the body or in one or more recesses or grooves formed therein. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the porous tungsten body 15 is impregnated with aluminium-barium oxide mixed with calcium oxide and has a recess 16 containing the second supply of emissive material 17 which can be a metal, a metallic oxide, an alloy or mixed crystals of substances such as barium, strontium and calcium carbonates, having a work function less than that of tungsten. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the porous body comprises a cylindrical portion 22 integral with a cone-shaped portion 22<SP>1</SP> and the second supply of emissive material 25 is formed as a paste in the annular groove 24. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the second supply of emissive material is formed as a coating 25 on the impregnated porous body 22. The second supply of emissive material can be applied by spraying, coating or cataphoresis. The mechanical strength can be improved by drying or sintering in an atmosphere of hydrogen, nitrogen or of another reducing or inert gas.
