Abstract

714,429. Electrode materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BOWTELL, J. N., MILES, E. E., ROOKSBY, H. P., and STEWARD, E. G. July 10, 1952 [July 16, 1951; July 25, 1951], Nos. 16840/51 and 17631/51. Class 39(1) A thermionic cathode for a gas or vapour discharge tube has electron emissive material which consists wholly or mainly of a mixture of one or more alkaline earth oxides with one or more alkaline earth tungstates of the formula X 3 WO 6 where X is one or more of the alkaline earth metals. The tungstate may be mixed with the alkaline earth oxide or powdered tungsten or tungsten oxide of grain size ¢ to 5 microns is mixed with alkaline earth compounds, e.g. carbonates, and heated to 1300‹C during the processing of the tube. Barium or strontium oxides separately or mixed is preferred; not more than 10 per cent of calcium oxide may be used. The material mixed with gum tragacanth is shaped into pellets for enclosure within the cathode or a suspension thereof may be dipped, painted or sprayed on to the cathode, e.g. a coiled coil filament for a fluorescent discharge lamp.
