Abstract
1,262,420. Cold-cathode tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 13 July, 1970 [14 July, 1969], No. 33871/70. Heading H1D. A voltage overload protector comprises a gastight housing (not shown) and two electrodes 2 and 3 facing one another within the housing, at least one of the electrodes having a coating 4 comprising a substance having a high thermal electron emissivity and nickel, the coating being formed by applying a powdered mixture of the components to the surface and sintering the powdered mixture. Preferably the emissive substance is thorium oxide amounting to 10- 50% by weight, and the other constituents may be 0-20% magnesium oxide and 30-90% nickel. The thorium oxide should have a grain size of 1-50 Á, the magnesium oxide 0À2-10 Á, and the nickel 1-50 Á, preferred sizes being 30 Á, 2 Á, and 10 Á respectively. The electrodes may be of a nickel-iron or a nickel-iron-cobalt alloy, and the powdered mixture may be sintered on at 900 C.
