A heating filament for a thermionic valve comprises a metal filament having an electrically insulating first coating of aluminium oxide, beryllium oxide, or a mixture thereof, and a second coating applied to the first coating including aluminium oxide, beryllium oxide, or a mixture thereof, and an oxide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, thorium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, or uranium, or mixtures thereof. The first coating is applied to the metal filament in a known manner and sintered, the second coating being subsequently applied by spraying, immersion, or electrophoresis to a thickness of approximately 30 microns. The second coating is then sintered in vacuo, hydrogen, or carbon monoxide gas.
